[backmatter] Checking out Starman's promo from the 90s
It's my birthday today, that means I can post whatever I want! So, basically, James Robinson and Tony Harris' Starman is my all-time favourite comic book series. Let's see how DC promoted it!
I got into James Robinson, Tony Harris, and later Peter Snejbjerg’s Starman because I was an avid library-goer. Every other week, I picked up trades featuring Jack Knight’s adventures. “Sins of the Father”, “Night and Day”, “A Wicked Inclination”, “Times Past”, “Infernal Devices”, “To Reach the Stars”, “A Starry Knight” and “Stars My Destination”. All bangers.
Unfortunately, they never did get in “Grand Guignol” or “Sons of the Father” before I stopped going there on weekends, so it took buying the entire run in singles to read the whole story. Oops.
I eventually owned all the trades too, and then when DC released their six-volume omnibus collection, I purchased them as well, so I now have the series in 3 different formats. 4 if you count the digital files I once bought on a CD off eBay. Hee hee hee.
Was I too young for the somewhat mature themes featured within? Probably. Did the world created by these masters-of-their-craft stick with me? Absolutely.
Now, this isn’t where I’m going to talk about much I love the series, but quite simply, Starman was a massive influence on me as a writer. Here’s how it was promoted by DC through the 90s:
What did I do with all that inspiration? I wrote.
So, as ever, if you’re enjoying my newsletter, please consider buying my book!

I hope you had a great Birthday 🎂 🎉🍾🎁
